Alder-Ash is operated by Shaun Janse van Vuuren, a sole proprietor trading as Alder-Ash. We are committed to handling your personal information responsibly and transparently, in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and other applicable South African law.

This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, and what your rights are.

What Personal Information We Collect

When you visit our website or place an order, we may collect:

  • Your name, email address, and contact details
  • Shipping and billing address
  • Payment information (see Payment Processing below)
  • Order history and transaction details
  • Browsing behaviour on our site (via cookies and analytics tools)
  • Communications you send to us, including customer support enquiries

Why We Collect It

We collect your personal information to:

  • Process and fulfil your orders
  • Arrange delivery through our courier partners
  • Communicate with you about your order or enquiries

Payment Processing

Payments are processed securely through Yoco. Alder-Ash does not directly receive or store customers' full payment-card numbers. Personal information necessary to process a transaction may be shared with Yoco and its relevant banking, payment-network and service-provider partners in accordance with Yoco's privacy and security requirements.

How We Use and Share Your Information

We do not sell or rent your personal information to third parties.

We share your information only where necessary to operate the business, including with:

  • Shopify International Limited and relevant Shopify affiliates and service providers, which host and power our store. For more information, see Shopify's privacy policy at shopify.com/legal/privacy.
  • Yoco, to process payments securely.
  • Aramex or The Courier Guy, to deliver your order. Customer information is shared only with the courier used to fulfil the relevant order, not both.
  • Customer communication tools, to manage order notifications and support enquiries.

These service providers are permitted to use your information only to perform services on our behalf and are required to handle it responsibly.

Analytics and Cookies

Our store uses cookies and Shopify's built-in analytics to help us understand how our site is used. We do not currently use third-party advertising pixels (such as Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, or Google Ads tags). If this changes, we will update this policy accordingly.

You may disable cookies in your browser settings, though this may affect some functionality.

Cross-Border Transfers

Alder-Ash sells and delivers products only within South Africa and does not offer international shipping.

Certain technology and other service providers used by Alder-Ash may process or store personal information outside South Africa as part of providing their services. Shopify may process customer personal information internationally, including in Singapore and Canada, and Alder-Ash's Shopify contracting entity is based in Ireland.

Where personal information is transferred outside South Africa, Alder-Ash will handle such transfers in accordance with section 72 of POPIA and applicable safeguards.

This cross-border processing relates solely to data infrastructure and service-provider operations and does not mean that Alder-Ash conducts cross-border sales or customer fulfilment.

How We Protect Your Information

Alder-Ash takes reasonable technical and organisational precautions to protect your personal information against unauthorised access, loss, or misuse. Our store is hosted on Shopify, which maintains industry-standard security measures. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

How Long We Keep Your Information

We retain your personal information for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes described in this policy, to comply with our legal obligations, and to resolve any disputes.

Your Rights Under POPIA

You have the right to:

  • Request access to the personal information we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information
  • Object to the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances
  • Request deletion of your personal information, subject to our legal obligations

Direct Marketing

Where permitted under POPIA section 69, Alder-Ash may send an existing customer electronic marketing about Alder-Ash's own similar products or services where the customer's contact details were obtained in the context of a sale. This will only be done where the customer was given a reasonable, free and uncomplicated opportunity to object to such marketing when the contact details were collected and has not objected.

Customers will also be given a reasonable, free and uncomplicated opportunity to opt out in every subsequent electronic marketing communication. Where the existing-customer exception does not apply, consent will be obtained where required by POPIA.
